An Essay by One of our Students (Written for Another Class):
Driver’s Ed and the Learner’s Permit

In order to acquire a driver’s license, the state requires that a student first attain a learner’s permit. To get a learner’s permit, students must take a driver education course and pass an exam on its material at the DMV. Students have traditionally been given the option of taking Driver’s Ed as either a high school course or at private driving schools. These options, although perfectly valid and trustworthy, require students to dedicate many extra hours after school or on weekends in order to complete the required course. For this reason, several websites currently offer the required materials online so that one may obtain his or her driver’s education without ever leaving home. This fashion of online Driver’s Ed has become increasingly popular because of its ability to save time and potentially money as well.

Driver’s Ed courses usually necessitate students to attend at least 30 hours of classes before attempting to take the actual exam. With online courses however, students can take as long as they need without the pressure of deadlines or material quizzes. Students can choose to work on their online material whenever is convenient for them and whenever they’re comfortable. A majority of the websites that provide the online courses also offer a number of practice exams in order to boost the students’ confidence before appearing for the real exam.

Other than having the ability to move at the student’s desired pace, learning the material at home gives the parents an opportunity to get involved with the information and the studying. Being able to work at one’s own pace and having parental guidance have proven to be beneficial for most of the students who have opted to take the course online. A recent study has shown that students who completed the online course performed as well or better than classroom students on the permit test. With the advancement of online courses, even traffic school is being offered online to adults.

After a student has completed his or her course online and has passed the exam, the DMV-approved certificate of completion is sent by the next day. Students in California must have their permits for at least six months before being able to obtain a driver’s license which is activated with proper driver’s training. After driver’s training has been completed, students can then proceed to take the road test, where students must demonstrate that they have mastered the skills of driving in order to receive a license.

Good luck and have fun!
